Generating good income from facilitating Business School. -Bishnu Kumar Shrestha Shambhu Khanal, habitant of Gajuri Rural Municipality, has been experiencing a change in his schedule these days. Having a family of 5 members with a wife being indulged in household chores and two sons studying, “I’m no more unemployed” says with a big smile on his face. Khanal used to spend most of his days in field and a small shop owned by him. But the scenario got changed once he received training from FANSEP project. “After I got trained, I got knowledge of animal rearing, productive agriculture using modern tools and techniques and nutrition practice. Now I facilitate the training myself in agriculture schools implemented in different wards of Gajuri RM.” Says Khanal. Government of Nepal has been implementing Food and Nutrition Security Enhancement Project (FANSEP) with technical assistance of UN FAO. FOCUS-Nepal, a NGO working in Dhading has been acting as a service provider (SP) in the project aiming to enhance climate resilience, improve agricultural productivity and nutrition practice of targeted smallholder farmers in the project area. Aiming to capacitate the farmers to analyze their production systems, problem identification, explore the possible solutions, and eventually encouraged the participants to adopt the good practices in farming. Farmers trained to goat castrate are serving as technicians in communities which have created the good income opportunities for them. Farmers have easy access to animal health including treatment and vaccination services. FOCUS Nepal under FANSEP project formed a farmer’s group in the village naming ‘Safal Pashupalan Farmer’s Group’ helping in registration of permanent account number, account operation, and registered in the ‘Krishi Gyan Kenrda’ and provided us with opportunities to participate in various programs that help in uplifting skills, knowledge and applying them on their daily lives. “Our method of animal husbandry has been different. From the training provided by FANSEP, We learned of how animal husbandry can be flourished and income can be generated in training school.” says Khanal getting excited.” Only a few months ago, I sold 60 KG of goat which generated 39,000 NPR of income and helped to clear my household debt. In addition, I am now very busy to facilitate in the school. I have been earning around 1,20,000 from goat rearing and around 26000 from facilitating the school.” Khanal received a 14 days training provided by FOCUS Nepal to facilitate a livestock farmer school which resulted him being one of the facilitators in Gajuri which helped him in his income generation and managed goat rearing. “I have undergone a 14 days training to become a facilitator and also training to run an agribusiness school”. Says Khanal. “The FANSEP project has made my life happy and prosperous. Until yesterday, I am a person who used to farm only for daily living. But after I got trained, I have been able to earn 26,000 per month by rearing animals in an organized way and being a facilitator. The project has changed the fate of entire village including me. So I would like to express my thankfulness to the entire FANSEP family.”
